I recently had the opportunity to photograph one of Boston’s newest and most up and coming bars, Carrie Nation, situated in the city’s Beacon Hill area. If the photos don’t make you want to go and check out this place then the cocktail list definitely should.
Carrie Nation is in effect two separate entities in the one overall space. You have a really wonderful and spacious restaurant and bar that is open for lunch through dinner all during the week and then at the back, tucked down a long hallway, you have something really special: a speakeasy style-cocktail bar. This is a really unique space that has been styled so perfectly that you could swear you were back in the prohibition days and I jumped at the chance to photograph the interior of this great Boston bar.
The main restaurant and bar in the front is also very well decorated and the style flows seamlessly between there and the speakeasy bar at the back so that you don’t feel that it is two separate locations. With my shoot, I was solely focusing on photographing the speakeasy and I have to say, what a pleasure that was to capture. I wanted to maintain that dark sultry feeling that the lighting in the room created and to show the features of the bar from a number of different angles. With no natural light coming into the space I didn’t want to over power the mood with loads of flash and kill the ambiance. Carefully choosing and lighting parts of each scene allowed me to really show off what this bar really has to offer.
With three main spaces making up the speakeasy I want to show them all off and maintain the same ambiance through all of them. The main bar has a really great feel to it, from the bar stools and dark wood paneling through to the mirrors and flooring, and capturing each of these elements was my goal as so much detail had gone into every aspect.
The seating area, situated in the center of the space had great furniture and lighting that again fitted the overall theme and era that the bar was replicating. This flowed in and round to the pool room which had two full sized tables with plenty of space to spare. Along the side of this part of the room were old shoe shine chairs that really packed the room with character.
Carrie Nation speakeasy cocktail bar should be on your list of locations to have a tipple when in town if it is not already!
